A unique technology for increased mussel profit
SMART Farm AS is a Norwegian, independent company, which pride
itself on having unique solutions for growing, husbandry and
harvesting of mussels that ensure good growth, reduces labour
costs and improves working conditions.
The solution, which is based on testing and
experience in mussel on-growing sites in Norway, includes a system
for on growing, as well as a machine for husbandry-work and harvesting.
The on-growing system is intended for areas
where the mussels are pelagic and thrive in the upper water levels,
and consists of several on-growing units, which are permanently
in water. Husbandry and harvesting is done in the water without
dismantling/reassembling the collector or buoyancy. It also has
simple mooring and handling, is easy to move and has gentle motions
in waves.
The units are adapted to each site using PE
pipe for buoyancy with the mussel-collector running the length,
secured with UV-resistant rope. It is also an aesthetically good
solution, as the pipe length is less visible than when using
traditional buoys.
Another unique product from Smart Farm is
the husbandry and harvesting machine. It is custom-designed for
Smart Farms on-growing system, and an excellent tool for
efficient operation with a minimum use of resources - replacing
most of the traditional labour involved with husbandry and harvesting.
The machine has many advantages for the user
such as controlling spat-density by adjusting the machines
brushes according to the reduction required; Smart Farm believes
that by giving the mussels good conditions from the start, it
will optimise growth and this is the only machine available that
is able to clean the on-growing stretch under water before new
spat attachments.
It also removes predators such as starfish,
which reduces the empty sections of the collector.
Moreover, the machine allows gentle harvesting,
as the mussels are pumped directly onboard the harvesting boat
in one single, fast and gentle operation with minimum labour.
The collector cleans ahead of a new spat attachment.
If harvesting is done during the winter, growth of fauna may
occur on the collector and it is therefore necessary to clean
before the new spat season. The machine is self-buoyant and is
controlled from a hydraulic-panel onboard an assisting boat.
The Smart Farm solution promises reduction
in manpower and better working conditions. Hence, an improvement
of the total economic result.
Best regards
